Wetin Lawyers Dey Do...Sef? for ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY III

9th September 2008

The workshop, holding at the Muson Centre, Onikan Lagos, will cover the following areas;

Dtalkshop, organisers of the Wetin Lawyers Dey Do… Sef? Workshop series
and publishers of TAKAii magazine will on Tuesday, the 9th of September,
2008 host the 3rd edition of the above stated workshop, as part of their
continuing effort to contribute to the development of the entertainment
industry. We believe that fora of this nature are necessary in Nigeria, as
though the worth of the industry seems to reportedly grow in leaps and
bounds, the practitioners are still hamstrung by lack of funds and access
to finance and structures that will enable a sustained return on their
investments.

The perennial problem in the Industry has always been ownership of the
entertainment product, particularly between financiers and the creative
talent.  The central question is always, what is the product and who owns
what?  For instance in music, the final product of a solo artist is
packaged for sale in a medium such as a compact disc.  Within the final
product are component products possibly created by different individuals
such as the writer of the lyrics, the arranger of the music notes, the
producer of the entire album, the producer of a single track, the sound
engineer, etc.  Any economic exploitation of the final product must take
into account its components.  D-Banj recently announced that he has gone
into an exclusive distribution deal with UAC through their Mr. Biggs food
chain.  What would be sold out of Mr. Biggs outlets are the finished
product (audio or video compact discs).  In this case, what would be of
interest is who gets the benefit of this distribution arrangement – the
financier, the producer, the artist?  These questions are usually answered
in the contracts that bring the component parties together.  However, they
must all be aware of what they own and its value to the final product.

We will also be looking at other areas of interest; with new media and
platforms becoming available to showcase the entertainment product, such
as mobile telephone downloads, internet streaming of programmes, it is
important to define as early as possible what the products in the
entertainment industry are, who owns the different parts, and who is
entitled to what as the product evolves and takes on different value.

Participation is free, however interested participants must RSVP: details
on how to do that will be posted shortly.
