Understanding Law and Lawyers....Nko?
Issue : 003 July - September 2005
Act 1, Scene 3
Another three months have gone by and we’re still here trying to tell more people that law can indeed be fun and hope that after two editions our readers appreciate that there are lawyers who are willing to help us understand those hereinunders, locus standi, prima facies, wherefores, and torts before we get into legal trouble and have to pay those hefty legal fees.
In this edition we talk about the difficulties in understanding the Laws of the Federation (of Nigeria) when lawyers and law books have for so long made them inaccessible in language and understanding. Any lay person who has tried to interpret a law will find that there is no such thing as plain English in the legal profession. As our friends in advertising would say, “Beware of the small print”. While the legal community and concerned citizens are trying to make amendments to existing laws, we at TAKAii promise to continue sharing information about the law and lawyers, as we know that information is power. The good news is that we are cultivating a new generation of lawyers that will speak in a language we can all understand. One of such lawyers is our little friend Ori Attah who tells us in this edition why she wants to be a lawyer. Also, several people have admitted to us that they never really thought much about the legal profession and now, because of TAKAii, wish they had studied law. We look forward to profiling them in our Metamorphosis section.
Please send us your contributions (and we do accept questions as well) and the best contribution will get a copy of Legal Habits, courtesy of Legal City Megastores, Lagos.
As always we say, TAKAii (Tell them) that Law can be Fun!
